Learning to Drive "The System"
DMAP3 is where your advanced driving journey becomes serious. It’s designed for drivers who’ve had a taste of Roadcraft - through DMAP2 or prior learning - and are now ready to immerse themselves in the full system, properly and in depth. This is the course where you stop experimenting with individual techniques and start committing to Roadcraft as your new normal.
You’ll be coached through the full Police system of car control in detail. We revisit the building blocks - Information, Position, Speed, Gear, Acceleration - but with more depth and higher expectations. Each element is explored in real-world situations that demand greater accuracy, faster processing and clearer decision-making. You’ll start to appreciate how the system isn’t a theoretical structure but a working model that, when applied well, reduces workload and enhances control - even when conditions get more demanding.
This level is all about repetition, correction, and refinement. You’re not expected to be perfect - but you are expected to try. That means moving from “roughly right” to “precisely thought out”. We’ll challenge lazy habits and encourage sharper observation, smoother control inputs and greater consistency. You’ll begin to see how timing, positioning and preparation can transform a drive from merely safe to seriously satisfying.
Key development areas include:
- Detailed Observation Skills – refining your scanning techniques, spotting subtle cues, understanding how micro-hazards build into macro problems.
- Proper Use of the System – deploying IPSGA rigorously, especially on unfamiliar roads, complex junctions and in evolving traffic environments.
- Hazard Planning – developing longer planning horizons and pre-positioning the car in anticipation of known and unknown risks.
- Refined Car Control – improving mechanical sympathy, acceleration sense, brake modulation and gear selection to maintain flow and stability.
- Road Positioning with Purpose – learning how to command the road with confident, courteous positioning that aids both safety and visibility.
DMAP3 coaching will be more technical and more honest. Expect direct feedback, honest assessments, and repeated practice in a range of situations. You'll cover more miles and be exposed to more varied roads. Coaches will probe your understanding and challenge your assumptions. At this level, we're not just polishing skills - we're recalibrating how you think behind the wheel.
It’s also where confidence starts to grow in a different way. Not the confidence that comes from experience alone, but the kind that comes from knowing why something works, and being able to repeat it. You’ll begin to understand how advanced driving is a mindset as much as a technique - and why the best drives often feel unhurried, even when you're making rapid, efficient progress.
DMAP3 is not the final step, but it’s the foundation upon which everything in DMAP4 will rest. Many drivers will choose to do this level more than once, using each session to go deeper into the system, close the gaps in their application, and build toward genuine fluency.
Session Format
The overall aims are set out above, but of course we will tailor your day to suit you. If there's one part of your driving that you'd like to focus on (e.g. overtaking or cornering techniques), then we'll happily plan the day accordingly.
A day will normally run from 09:30 until 16:30 or earlier depending how tired you become. There’s a lot to take on board.
All coaching takes place in the student’s own car. Driving Masters will provide lunch and appropriate breaks to manage fatigue. 100-150 miles are likely to be driven.
After the session your coach will write up a summary and you'll also receive a certificate, confirming your attendance.
How do we coach you to unlock your full potential?
We pair you up with a local coach, on a day of your choosing.
Our coaching takes place on public roads with our instructor sat beside you in your road car, guiding and coaching you across a range of situations.
