Throttle Mastery – Driving without Braking!

Your car and your passengers will thank you if you can minimise your braking

Driving without using the brakes is an advanced driving technique that focuses on maximising the use of the throttle to control the car's speed whilst navigating various driving situations and hazards.

This method, whilst not typically recommended for inexperienced drivers, can be a valuable skill for those looking to enhance their driving abilities and better understand and implement the use of ‘advanced observations and advanced planning’ and developing ‘light and shade and smoothness and flow’ into their driving style, through delicate and precise use of the throttle pedal.

In advanced driving circles this skill is known as "Acceleration Sense".

Whilst driving without braking instigates a useful fuel economy strategy, this is only part of the story of throttle mastery. For example; you see a corner coming up someway ahead, instead of staying on the power and braking as you would normally, start to modulate the accelerator so the speed you reach as you get to the corner, is perfect. Without using brakes to perform the same job. More about that later.

Understanding the Basics

Learn to modulate the accelerator fluently; eliminating abrupt or jerky throttle inputs and practice gradual changes in speed through delicate and smooth throttle movements.

Whilst downshifting to lower gears increases engine braking, which in turn helps to slow the car without using the brakes, changing down the gears is not what experts call ‘acceleration sense’ which is done primarily through modulating the throttle, based on what is happening ahead on the road scene.

Reading the road ahead (observations – planning – anticipation – situational awareness) is crucial, so look into the distance and spot any hazards that will need action from the driver, as they appear. This includes timely spotting of potential hazards such as curves, hill crests, intersections or changes in elevation and road, traffic and weather conditions. By identifying such elements early, it creates more time to adjust your speed using the throttle.

Speed Modulation using the Throttle

Gently adjust the accelerator to control your speed. To slow down, gradually lift off the throttle rather than suddenly releasing it. If you’re in the correct gear for the speed you are driving at, this aspect also helps engine braking to reduce speed smoothly – a ‘win- win’ for improved control.

Determine early and assess the appropriate speed for the upcoming hazard. For example; a sharp corner may require a significant reduction in speed, while a gentle bend may need only a slight adjustment, if any at all.

Benefits of Driving Without Braking

It helps reduce abrupt stops and starts and promotes a smoother driving style which is more comfortable for passengers and can reduce wear on the vehicle.

Less reliance on brakes can lead to more efficient driving and better fuel economy and reduced energy loss (including EV’s too). Expert throttle use also minimises wear and tear on brake components, extending their lifespan.

Whilst driving without braking is an advanced skill that requires significant practice and a thorough understanding of safe closing speeds on approach to all hazards, it enhances driving proficiency, visual scanning and planning abilities too, which is never a bad thing.

Practical Scenarios

Without question, it is best to start in low traffic density areas: begin practicing on quiet roads with minimal traffic to focus on throttle control and anticipation without distractions.

Gradually increase the complexity of the roads you practice on, starting with straight roads and then moving to more challenging routes with curves and hills.

Continuously seek self-evaluation on your driving style to refine your throttle control technique and start using throttle mastery in your general everyday driving. Remember that each time you feel the need to ease off the throttle, link this with a mirror check as you will be altering speed.

Example 1 - Approaching a Corner

Initial Observation: locate and identify the corner well in advance. Assess the vision available driving into it, its sharpness plus other potential hazards and the appropriate speed to navigate it safely.

On approach to the corner (and if necessary) gradually lift off the throttle to reduce speed. Once at the desired speed, maintain a steady ‘balanced throttle’ through the corner and avoid accelerating more briskly until you can clearly see the exit.

Example 2 - Approaching a Hill Crest

Early Detection: Spot the hill crest early and estimate the speed required to crest it safely. Gradually lift off the throttle to slow down as you approach the crest if necessary – always matching your speed to the vision available. If the descent on the other side is steep, consider using a lower gear to assist engine braking to control speed on the descent.

Safety Considerations

Emergency preparedness - always be ready to use the brakes if you get it wrong or if meeting something that could turn into an emergency. Safety should never be compromised.

By mastering these techniques, you can improve your driving skills, making for a safer and more controlled driving experience, even on challenging country roads. As usual, learning new skills is part of advancing your own driving performance, but safety remains the ultimate goal at all times.
