Bring Back the Hard Shoulder says RAC

The RAC is renewing calls for the demise of the Smart Motorway

Whilst the rollout of new Smart Motorways has been largely halted, the RAC called this week for the Government to reinstate hard shoulders on existing schemes.

The 'All Lane Running' motorways have hosted many a horrific accident where vehicles have stopped in live lanes due to the lack of hard shoulder.

The first section of Smart Motorway was on the M25 in Hertfordshire back in 2014.

The controversial system almost made it to the courts in 2022 when South Yorkshire Police considered a charge of corporate manslaughter in relation to one incident.
