Spain’s 150kph AI Motorway

With greater speed comes greater responsibility

Spain’s Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has set a new precedent in European traffic management by introducing a 150kph (93mph) speed limit on a 90-mile stretch of the AP-7 motorway between Maçanet de la Selva and El Vendrell.

This initiative is not merely a numerical increase — it’s a sophisticated experiment in dynamic speed regulation, powered by artificial intelligence and real-time data analytics.

A Dynamic, Data-Driven Approach

Unlike the variable speed limits manually managed in the UK, the AP-7’s new regime supposedly leverages AI to continuously assess key variables: weather, traffic flow, volume, and time of day.

The system raises the speed limit to 150kph only when conditions are optimal—clear weather, light traffic, and good visibility. Conversely, it automatically reduces the limit when adverse weather or congestion threatens safety.

Spain joins a select group of countries employing such advanced, adaptive systems, drawing lessons from the UK’s variable speed limits but pushing the envelope with higher thresholds and a more granular, AI-driven approach.

Implications for Advanced Drivers

It begs the question of how well equipped most drivers are for prolonged use of 90mph+ speeds. Whilst most motorists will claim proficiency, the greater stopping distances required are not to be dismissed lightly.

  • Precision at Speed: At 150kph, even minor inputs—steering, braking, throttle—must be executed with finesse. Advanced drivers are trained to maintain stability, optimise lane positioning, and ensure smooth progress, all while scanning for hazards far ahead.
  • Adaptive Speed Management: The core of advanced driving is adjusting speed to match the environment. The AI system’s variable limits reinforce the principle that speed should always be dictated by prevailing conditions, not arbitrary targets. Advanced drivers must constantly reassess and recalibrate their speed in response to changing information, just as the system does.
  • Defensive Strategy: High-speed motoring amplifies risk. Defensive driving—anticipating the actions of others, maintaining generous following distances, and planning escape routes—becomes non-negotiable.
  • Environmental Awareness: The system’s reliance on weather and traffic data mirrors the advanced driver’s habit of integrating environmental cues into every decision. Mastery of observation and interpretation is essential at these speeds.

The Road Ahead

With Spain's more sparsely populated motorways, we don't expect any particular drama to surround the implementation. Safe to say though that any major incident will immediately come under the spotlight and require fresh justification for this bold limit.
